Second seed Djokovic was a shadow of the player who a year ago completed a career Grand Slam by winning Roland Garros for the first time to hold all four major trophies simultaneously.
He will fall out of the ATP top two for the first time since 2011.Thiem had never beaten Djokovic in five previous matches, but the 23-year-old's game turned into a juggernaut as he dominated to deny the Serb a ninth Paris semifinal.Thiem reversed course after winning just one game against Djokovic last month in Rome.
The Austrian finished on his second match point. He takes a 2-4 record into the showdown with Nadal, whom he beat in the Rome quarters."It's amazing to defend my semifinal from last year," Thiem said. "Rafa is the toughest opponent ever at Roland Garros.

"The score was always running with me today, it looked easier than it was."Nadal stands two wins from another trophy as title odds improve for the 31-year-old.
"I am in semifinals with a very positive feelings," Nadal said. "I played well in all the matches here. I have positive feelings and am playing well. This was obviously was not the perfect way and especially against a good friend."
